Hong Kong Shue Yan University 55th Anniversary Celebration: Community Service Project Series
Department of History: “Exploring the Aberdeen Fishing Harbour: Discovering the Life Stories of Fisherfolk”
This year marks the 55th anniversary of Hong Kong Shue Yan University. To celebrate this milestone, the University is launching the “Community Service Project Series.” The Department of History will organize an academic and community field study activity entitled “Exploring the Aberdeen Fishing Harbour: Discovering the Life Stories of Fisherfolk.”
Starting from the Aberdeen Fishing Harbour, this activity invites participants to step into a waterborne world distinct from the rhythm of urban life, and to understand Hong Kong’s fisherfolk culture from both historical and everyday-life perspectives.
At the beginning of the event, participants will take a ferry ride to tour the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, conducting an on-site field study from a maritime perspective to observe the fishing harbour landscape and deepen their understanding of the history and development of Hong Kong’s fishing industry.
Participants will then board the Tai Pak Fish-Watching Boat for an exchange session. Through first-hand experience and interactive interviews, they will listen to the life stories of elderly fisherfolk. Integrating academic research with the transmission of local knowledge, the activity enables participants to understand how fisherfolk culture is preserved, sustained, and transformed in daily life, and to reflect on its historical and cultural significance within Hong Kong society.

Workshop: " The Rise of China and its Implications for the Eurocentric Worldview"
The Research Office will hold a workshop titled " The Rise of China and its Implications for the Eurocentric Worldview", conducted by Prof. LAU Wing Kam, Raymond, a visiting Senior Research Fellow in Contemporary China Research Center of HKSYU.
Details of the workshop:
Title: The Rise of China and its Implications for the Eurocentric Worldview
Presenter: Prof. LAU Wing Kam, Raymond
Date: 24 March 2026 (Tuesday)
Time: 13:00-14:15
Location: RLB303, Research Complex, Hong Kong Shue Yan University
The rise of China in economic and technological terms carries immense implications for the world. Political commentators generally see this in terms of a shift in the balance of state power from a unipolar to a multipolar world order. While this is a related issue, our attention is on a different level, namely, what the rise of China potentially implies for the future trajectory of world civilization. For the past 500 years, world civilization has been dominated by the Eurocentric worldview, which sees Euro-America as ‘superior’ in cultural terms and hence regards Euro-America as the standard by which the rest of the world is measured and judged. The rise of China poses a grave challenge to this worldview, opening up the prospect of the world’s emancipation from it in spiritual, cognitive and cultural terms, thereby laying the grounds for world civilization to develop towards a diversified future.

Outdoor Learning Experience Activity: Field Study and Fisherfolk Interviews
This outdoor learning activity was jointly led by Dr. Pang Suk-Man, Associate Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of History, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, and Mr. Kwan Chi-Hang, Vice Principal of the Methodist Church HK Wesley College, with the participation of several dozen teachers and students from both institutions.
The activity began with a ride on the Tai Pak Ferry to tour the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, where participants conducted an on-site study of the fishing harbour environment and the lives of the local boat-dwelling community. This enriched students’ understanding of the history and development of Hong Kong’s fishing industry.
Following the tour, the group boarded the Tai Pak Fish-Watching Boat for a two hour interactive session hosted by Dr. Pang Suk-Man, author of Fishermen’s Church in Hong Kong. Elderly fisherfolk from Aberdeen were invited to share their personal experiences. Through oral history interviews, students gained deeper insight into the life stories of the fisherfolk and their unique traditions of living on the water, experiencing the integration of academic research and cultural transmission in practice.
The activity concluded with teachers, students, and fisherfolk guests enjoying a bowl of traditional Boat Noodles, adding an immersive cultural flavour and educational meaning to the learning experience.

Pathways to Success: Alumni Perspectives on Teaching Careers
The Industrial Attachment Office (IAO) at HKSYU debuted the event “Pathways to Success: Alumni Perspectives on Teaching Careers” in collaboration with the Departments of Chinese, English, and History, welcoming alumni from the three departments—now working as teachers—to return to campus and share their experiences. Their insights helped HKSYU students interested in the education sector better understand the Education Concentration.
The alumni highlighted that the Education Concentration includes a Work Placement course, which serves as a foundation for becoming teachers. Alumnus Mak, teaching at Academy of Innovation (Confucius Hall), expressed his aspiration to positively influence students and provide guidance for those feeling lost. Alumnus Su, an English teacher at VNSAA St. Hilary’s School, acknowledged the physical and mental demands of teaching but noted that the experience has made him more patient, considerate, and thoughtful.
Professor HE Qiliang, Head of the Department of History, stated that teaching is least likely to be replaced by AI, and he believed that even in the foreseeable future, AI will not be able to replace teachers.

Speaker: Mr. Kwan Chi-Hang (Vice-principal, The Methodist Church Hong Kong Wesley College; Recipient of the "Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (CEATE) (2023/2024)" in the field of Personal, "Social, and Humanities Education (2023/2024)
Introduction: The contents are divided into three parts. To begin with, the speaker focuses on the challenges and responses to teaching history in the 21st century. Breakthroughs in computer technology have made it very easy for modern people to acquire and organise knowledge, so what should be taught in history? What should be taught and how? In this section, it will focus on the challenges that technology poses for teaching and learning and, in particular, how history teachers should respond to them. The second section is concerned with the shared teaching of history in secondary school. What is the concept of "learning like a historian"? What is the concept of "learning like a historian" and how can it be put into practice? Finally, the speaker will illustrate the relevant teaching concepts and the practical experience in real teaching situations using an example of a public lesson in this academic year.
Topic 2: The Application of Generative Artificial Intelligence in History Teaching

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Hong Kong Public Libraries in 2022, the Libraries organised the 32nd Chinese Poetry Writing Competition to promote Chinese language proficiency and public appreciation of traditional verse.
This year’s Ci composition category required participants to compose to the tune pattern “Die Lian Hua”. The judging panel consisted of Professor Ho Man Wui, Professor Nicholas Louis Chan, Professor Huang Kunyao, and Professor Lau Wai-Lam.
The competition received over 500 submissions, with impressive entries in both the Student and Open Sections. After rounds of primary and secondary selection and extensive deliberation, the judges determined the awardees. To ensure fairness, all submissions were reviewed anonymously.
