Teacher–Student Exchange Activity: Interdisciplinary Workshop

The Department of History of Hong Kong Shue Yan University collaborated with the Methodist Church HK Wesley College to organise an interdisciplinary teacher–student exchange workshop. The activity was hosted by Dr. Pang Suk-Man, Associate Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of History, who is also the author of Fishermen’s Church in Hong Kong.

Workshop Highlights

1. Exploring Fisherfolk History and Maritime Cultural Heritage
Dr. Pang introduced students to the history and cultural heritage of Hong Kong’s fisherfolk, focusing on the significance of typhoon shelters in community life and the traditional folk beliefs associated with their deities. The session helped students appreciate the characteristics of Hong Kong’s maritime culture and the importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage.

2. Historical Background of Floating Restaurants and Boat Noodles
Mr. Fu Jiayi, MPhil student in the Department of History, provided an overview of the Tai Pak Floating Restaurant, other floating eateries, and the development of traditional Boat Noodles.

3. Telling History Through Images
Mr. So Kai-Chi, an Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism and Communication, conducted a session on narrating historical stories through photographs, inspiring students to apply visual storytelling techniques to historical interpretation.

4. Library Visit and Digital Learning Session
Participants joined a guided tour of the University Library, followed by a thematic workshop titled “Learning History with AI and Digital Resources”, introducing practical digital tools and research strategies to enhance historical inquiry and promote interdisciplinary learning.
