2026 Outstanding Digital Humanities
Teaching Plan Competition Award Presentation Ceremony and Sharing Session
In an era in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) is profoundly reshaping the educational landscape, the humanities have not diminished in importance; rather, their significance has become increasingly evident.
To encourage educators to actively engage with digital transformation and to explore innovative pedagogical practices, the Digital and Humanities Education Association, together with Education Network, and the Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Fudan University, jointly present the 2026 Outstanding Digital Humanities Teaching Plan Competition.
This initiative seeks to promote excellence in digital humanities education and to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on the future of humanistic teaching in the age of AI.
Theme
Humanistic Values and the Future Classroom in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The Competition invites high-quality teaching plans that effectively integrate AI technologies, data analysis, and digital tools into classroom practice. Submissions should demonstrate how digital approaches can enhance students’ multi-perspective thinking, information literacy, critical reasoning, and innovative capacity.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University 55th Anniversary Celebration: Community Service Project Series
Department of History: “Exploring the Aberdeen Fishing Harbour: Discovering the Life Stories of Fisherfolk”
This year marks the 55th anniversary of Hong Kong Shue Yan University. To celebrate this milestone, the University is launching the “Community Service Project Series.” The Department of History will organize an academic and community field study activity entitled “Exploring the Aberdeen Fishing Harbour: Discovering the Life Stories of Fisherfolk.”
Starting from the Aberdeen Fishing Harbour, this activity invites participants to step into a waterborne world distinct from the rhythm of urban life, and to understand Hong Kong’s fisherfolk culture from both historical and everyday-life perspectives.
At the beginning of the event, participants will take a ferry ride to tour the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, conducting an on-site field study from a maritime perspective to observe the fishing harbour landscape and deepen their understanding of the history and development of Hong Kong’s fishing industry.
Participants will then board the Tai Pak Fish-Watching Boat for an exchange session. Through first-hand experience and interactive interviews, they will listen to the life stories of elderly fisherfolk. Integrating academic research with the transmission of local knowledge, the activity enables participants to understand how fisherfolk culture is preserved, sustained, and transformed in daily life, and to reflect on its historical and cultural significance within Hong Kong society.

The rise of China in economic and technological terms carries immense implications for the world. Political commentators generally see this in terms of a shift in the balance of state power from a unipolar to a multipolar world order. While this is a related issue, our attention is on a different level, namely, what the rise of China potentially implies for the future trajectory of world civilization. For the past 500 years, world civilization has been dominated by the Eurocentric worldview, which sees Euro-America as ‘superior’ in cultural terms and hence regards Euro-America as the standard by which the rest of the world is measured and judged. The rise of China poses a grave challenge to this worldview, opening up the prospect of the world’s emancipation from it in spiritual, cognitive and cultural terms, thereby laying the grounds for world civilization to develop towards a diversified future.

Scholars of Hong Kong Shue Yan University Harness Digital Humanities to Develop New Perspectives on Cultural Heritage
As society places increasing emphasis on cultural heritage development, the Government has been actively promoting conservation initiatives, while higher education institutions have also strengthened academic research in related areas. Scholars from the Department of History and the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University have conducted in-depth studies on cultural heritage and have integrated their research findings into teaching and learning, thereby enhancing the connection between academia and the wider community.
Shue Yan Newsletter invited five scholars from the Department of History and the Department of Sociology for an in depth interview. They include Professor Chan Ching (Academic Vice President, Department of Sociology), Professor Hui Yew Foong (Vice President (Accreditation and Programme Development)), Dr. Tsang Chung Kin (Associate Head, Department of Sociology), as well as Professor He Qiliang (Head, Department of History) and Dr. Pang Suk Man (Associate Head, Department of History).

Higher Education Institutions Student Cultural Ambassadors
The title of “Higher Education Institutions Student Cultural Ambassador”(大專學生文化大使), conferred by the Hong Kong Chinese Culture Development Association (HKCCDA), is awarded based on criteria that include students’ learning experiences and achievements related to Chinese culture, participation in and promotion of cultural activities, as well as their contributions to community service connected with Chinese cultural heritage.
We extend our warmest congratulations to Xuan Yuqi and Lee Yan lam of the Department of History for being awarded the title of “Higher Education Institutions Student Cultural Ambassador” in recognition of their dedicated efforts and outstanding achievements in promoting Chinese culture!
