Department of History HKSYU Academic Lecture
An academic seminar organized by the Department of History of Hong Kong Shue Yan University and co-organized by the Centre for Research and Teaching in Chinese will be held on February 15, 2025. The lecture will feature distinguished speakers, including Mr. Kwan Chi-hang, Vice-principal of the Methodist Church Hong Kong Wesley College and recipient of the "Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (CEATE) (2023/2024)" in the field of Personal, "Social, and Humanities Education (2023/2024)"; Mr. Hung Chiu-lung, a PhD candidate in Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Ms. Chung Wai-yee, Head of the Chinese History Discipline; and Mr. Chan Chi-wah, PT Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of History of Hong Kong Shue Yan University. They will discuss the exploration and practice of history teaching methods, the application of generative artificial intelligence in history education, and the diverse teaching methods in Chinese history. The welcoming remarks will be delivered by Professor He Qiliang, Head of the Department of History and Director of the Center for Research and Teaching in Chinese History, and Dr. Pang Suk-man, Associate Head of the Department of History, will introduce the latest curriculum developments in the department.

Topic 1: “The exploration and practice of the history teaching methods”
Speaker: Mr. Kwan Chi-Hang (Vice-principal, The Methodist Church Hong Kong Wesley College; Recipient of the "Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (CEATE) (2023/2024)" in the field of Personal, "Social, and Humanities Education (2023/2024)
Introduction: The contents are divided into three parts. To begin with, the speaker focuses on the challenges and responses to teaching history in the 21st century. Breakthroughs in computer technology have made it very easy for modern people to acquire and organise knowledge, so what should be taught in history? What should be taught and how? In this section, it will focus on the challenges that technology poses for teaching and learning and, in particular, how history teachers should respond to them. The second section is concerned with the shared teaching of history in secondary school. What is the concept of "learning like a historian"? What is the concept of "learning like a historian" and how can it be put into practice? Finally, the speaker will illustrate the relevant teaching concepts and the practical experience in real teaching situations using an example of a public lesson in this academic year.
Topic 2: The Application of Generative Artificial Intelligence in History Teaching
Speaker: Mr. Hung Chiu-Lung (Vice-principal, Queen Elizabeth School Old Students' Association Tong Kwok Wah Secondary School; PhD candidate in Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong)
Introduction: Mr.Hung will introduce the application of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) technology in the teaching and learning of history, including the use of AI for data analysis and the design of interactive learning activities. In addition, he is going to discuss how AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Gen AI Content Generation Platform, etc.) can be used to improve the effectiveness of teaching and thereby enhance the development of students' information literacy and critical thinking skills.
Topic 3: Multielement Chinese history teaching methods
Speaker: Ms. Chung Wai-Yee (Head of the Chinese History Discipline, St. Antonius Girls' College)
Introduction: The content will divided three parts. To begin with, the An Shi Rebellion will be shown, which has been taught at S1 level through a history court. To continue, it is about the evaluation of Qin Shi Huang, which has been taught at S4 level through debates. Thirdly, Ms. Chung is going to share Chinese history activities, which has included an exchange group from Shenyang to learn about the history of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
Topic 4: Sharing and responding to history pedagogy
Speaker: Mr. Chan Chi-Wa (PT visiting assistant professor)
Introduction: Historical teaching methods have changed over time. Mr. Chan’s presentation will respond to the above speakers and summarize current trends in teaching and learning.
